Malaysia welcomes Formula 1 action back to Sepang with racing, tourism and new connections
New Gulf Air route strengthens Bahrain-Malaysia travel links
DUBAI – Formula 1 action has returned to the iconic Sepang International Circuit, bringing together motorsport enthusiasts, racing professionals, international visitors and media representatives for a showcase of speed, innovation and international competition.
The event has placed Malaysia’s motorsport credentials and tourism attractions in the spotlight, with Sepang serving as both a racing venue and a gateway to the wider region.
The occasion also comes as new air connectivity between Bahrain and Kuala Lumpur prepares to make travel between the two destinations easier.
Racing heritage
Located just south of Kuala Lumpur, the Sepang International Circuit is recognised for its modern facilities, demanding track layout and history of hosting major international motorsport events. Opened in 1999, the circuit has played a central role in establishing Malaysia as a prominent destination on the international racing calendar and continues to attract fans from across the world.
Mohd Faharuddin Hatmin, Director of Tourism Malaysia, said the return of Formula 1 action at Sepang provided an opportunity to raise Malaysia’s profile among international audiences.
He said the event allows Sepang to function not only as a venue for world-class racing but also as a gateway for visitors to experience Malaysia’s culture, hospitality and varied tourism offerings.
As Title Sponsor of the event, Gulf Air is also highlighting its role in strengthening links between Bahrain and Malaysia. The national carrier of Bahrain is set to launch direct flights to Kuala Lumpur on 29 September 2026, creating a new connection for travellers and Formula 1 enthusiasts between the two destinations.
The airline is also the Title Sponsor of the FORMULA 1 GULF AIR BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX 2026 in Malaysia, with the new route expected to provide greater access to major sporting events while supporting travel and tourism ties between Bahrain and Malaysia.
